Toes Deformities
Hammer toes, mallet toes, claw toes, retracted toes and deviated toes are very common and can be troublesome. Deformed toes are most common in people who have bunions or high-arched feet. Although toes deformities may be present at birth, it usually develops over time due to poor foot posture, muscular tightness, arthritis or wearing ill-fitting shoes.
Discomfort from deformed toes is usually due to a build-up of hard skin over the raised joints, which causes corns and calluses. Toes can deviate towards the outer edge of the foot and cause pressure issue between toes. There’s also a risk of ulceration for aged people and people with chronic diseases, such as Diabetes or Peripheral Arterial Disease
Most cases may be helped by regular podiatry care (callouses and corns removal) , implementing various pressure deflective devices( including custom made Otoform props) , proper fitting footwear and foot posture correction innersoles. Underlying medical conditions , such as RA or neuropathy, must be ruled out as well. Occasionally, surgery might be necessary to correct the deformity.
